English supermodel Jean Shrimpton, escorted by the actor Terrence Stamp, shocks the world when she stepped off an aircraft on the 30th October 1965 and onto the Essendon Airport tarmac wearing a short white shift dress, en route to Derby Day at Flemington Racecourse.

The dress was made by Shrimpton’s dressmaker, Colin Rolfe, and the hem was 10 cm above the knee, because he had not been supplied with enough fabric to complete their intended design. Her appearance that day has become a pivotal moment in women’s fashion, and heralded the age of the mini, and a more relaxed approach to women’s fashion.
