In 1921, four possible aerodrome sites within 16 kilometres of the Melbourne CBD were investigated.

93 acres of farmland, known as ‘St John’s’ after an early pioneer, W.F.B. St John was selected.

The purchase of the land was gazetted on 11 August 1921, as “land for defence purposes at Broadmeadows.”
